You know, a while back, I met a young man named Shamus [Seamus?] in a V.F.W. And right here in the UCC, we're hearing from God about what it means to be a welcoming church that holds on to our Christian witness. I am grateful to finish this journey with one of the finest statesmen of our time, a man at ease with everyone from world leaders to the conductors on the Amtrak train he still takes home every night. And that is why we are providing more than $2.8 billion to help Afghans develop their economy and deliver services that people depend upon. America does not presume to know what is best for everyone, just as we would not presume to pick the outcome of a peaceful election.
But they sense, deep in their bones, that with just a slight change in priorities, we can make sure that every child in America has a decent shot at life, and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all. People in every country should be free to choose and live their faith based upon the persuasion of the mind, heart, and soul.
On November 4th, we must stand up and say: "Eight is enough." It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed. And any nation - including Iran - should have the right to access peaceful nuclear power if it complies with its responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Countries like Japan and South Korea grew their economies while maintaining distinct cultures.
More to do for the young woman in East St. Go into the collar counties around Chicago, and people will tell you they don't want their tax money wasted, by a welfare agency or by the Pentagon. But it is where we start. We are a better country than this. America, we cannot turn back. Unlike Afghanistan, Iraq was a war of choice that provoked strong differences in my country and around the world.
After the war, they studied on the G.I. Not this time. Because I've seen it.
